Abstract: Magnetic pulse welding (MPW) differs from explosive welding only in the energy source used to drive the flyer sheet: magnetic field energy instead of explosion energy. The interaction of the magnetic field with the sheet involves a number of features related to the amount of the capacitor bank energy used, the heating rate to the melting point, and the possibility of shape loss and instability of the sheet, which limit the capabilities of MPW. The effect of the field (current) skinning on the sheet acceleration process was studied. The acceleration efficiency for different thickness of the sheet was estimated. New MPW process has been developed: butt-welding of copper/copper and aluminum/aluminum sheets in 6-mm thick with wavy interfaces of the welds.
