Abstract: We obtain an exact solution to the problem of damped rotation of a solid cylinder and the surrounding viscous liquid which is at rest at infinity. We uncover a series of nontrivial characteristics of the dynamics of this hydromechanical system and establish in particular that the liquid can move faster than the boundary of the body. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
