Abstract: One of the recent trends in the development of aluminum matrix composites is the use of complex alloys (metallic glasses, high-entropy alloys, quasicrystals) as reinforcements. This chapter addresses the questions related to interaction of aluminum with the added particles of complex alloys in terms of the microstructure evolution and the influence of the in situ formed reaction products on the mechanical properties of the composites. The formation of core–shell particles and matrix modification by the in-situ formed dispersoids are considered. The experimentally observed enhancement of strength of composites with reaction layers relative to those without reaction layers is due to a more efficient load transfer to the reinforcing particles and an increased volume percentage of hard phases in the composite for thick reaction layers. The possible future research directions in this area also are identified.
