The present work studied the phase composition and microstructural features of composites obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS) under pressure and conventional (pressureless) sintering of an Al-20 vol.% Al62.5Cu25Fe12.5 (%at.) powder mixture. The temperature of pressureless sintering (570 °C) was set to be equal to the real temperature of the sample during SPS. The starting Al62.5Cu25Fe12.5 alloy powder consisted of the icosahedral and cubic phases. Diffusion of aluminium into the alloy particles during sintering led to the formation of the ω-Al7Cu2Fe phase. Composites produced by pressureless sintering comprised the same phases as the SPS-composite but showed incomplete densification. Pores were present at the Al/Al7Cu2Fe interfaces and in the matrix in composites obtained by pressureless sintering. The hardness of the composite obtained by SPS was 0.9 GPa, while that of composites obtained by pressureless sintering was only 0.6 GPa. The fracture in the SPS-composite occurred through the Al7Cu2Fe particles, indicating strong bonding at the Al/Al7Cu2Fe interface.
