Abstract: In this paper, we consider the issue of the mathematical modeling of flows of a suspension of solid particles with no assumptions about low concentrations. The difference in velocities between the particles and the binding liquid is taken into account by applying a two-continuum approach, in which the particles and the fluid are treated as two different viscous fluids. The role of the forces of buoyancy and gravity mobility on particle settling is studied. A qualitative comparison with the theory of Kynch’s concentration waves for the case of one-dimensional vertical flows is made. The role of vortices on the transverse migration of particles during sedimentation in a two-dimensional vessel is noted.
